Walter was one of 2 Australian's who the American's used to move their machinery and supplies up river during the night and hide during the day. Bully beef was the only food on board, and he rowed across to land and shot wild pigeons and cooked up, the American's liked it that much he was sent ashore often to shoot and cook them meat. Americans dropped both off at Brisbane after the war. Walter was worried about being a deserter as he had no document to say where or what he had done during the this time.
