Cairns Pioneer Cemetery, or McLeod Street Cemetery, was one of two original cemeteries in Cairns, the other being the Martyn Street Cemetery, which is still in operation. The McLeod Street site is now a registered pioneer cemetery managed and maintained in excellent condition by Cairns Regional Council subject to conditions specified by the Environmental Protection Agency.
An information rotunda has been erected on the site to provide information on grave locations together with basic details of all known burials here. A subsequent list of amendments indicates that a number of those named were actually interred at the Esplanade Cemetery. However, we have retained all of those names in this transcription with an appropriate note. As can be expected in much copied old records, many discrepancies were found between the burial list at the cemetery, headstone inscriptions and the Queensland deaths index. We were able to resolve some of these.
Des Cafe has contributed digital images he made during 2011 and 2012 of the cemetery, the lists of burials that are displayed in the rotunda and the inscriptions extant. We are grateful to Roma Waldron for her transcription of those details. Des' images may be downloaded from the list of inscriptions for this cemetery. That list was compiled with extensive reference to the Queensland and NSW indices of births, deaths and marriages for additional information.
Cairns Pioneer Cemetery is bordered by McLeod, Grove and Dunn Streets. Lat -16.91535, Long 145.764164
