Chillagoe General Cemetery has been in use since the turn of the 20th century. Monuments cover an area of about 1 hectare but because of the large proportion of unmarked graves, they are relatively scattered in the older areas. The grounds are well kept by Tablelands Regional Council and include a rotunda (see image above) that was completed and officially opened in 2002.
Mounted in the rotunda is an honour roll that lists all known or presumed burials at Chillagoe. These names have been included in the list of inscriptions for this cemetery. However, we did find numerous discrepancies between the data displayed and the Queensland deaths index, probably mostly due to copyist errors, and have amended some of the details that are obviously incorrect.
Peter and Karen Patterson-Kane visited the cemetery in July 2010 and have kindly contributed their digital images of the cemetery and all of its visible inscriptions. The inscriptions have been compiled from their pictures and with extensive reference to the Queensland indices of births, deaths and marriages for additional information.
The cemetery is 2.8km north of the post office. Cross the railway line near the station, take Aerodrome Road for 1.0km and then right into Cemetery Road for 1.2km. The cemetery is on the right hand side of the road.
The Chillago Cemetery is administered the Mareeba Shire Council. For further information, contact Council at PO Box 154, Mareeba QLD 4880; phone: 1300 308 461 OR 07 4086 4500 ; email: info@msc.qld.gov.au
