This cemetery is situated in a quiet area that was originally part of Old Tyabb, surrounded by the rich fruit and vegetable growing district of the Peninsula. The four foundation trustees of this cemetery were appointed in 1865. Quite a few of the local pioneering families in the Western Port area are buried here and were large land owners or council members. A quick walk through the cemetery will reveal surnames matching the names of several of the local roads, streets and lanes. Industry has since caught up, with the storage tanks of the Long Island Crude Oil Tank Farm out of sight from the cemetery but not far away.
Cemetery maps allowing 'Search for Deceased' on them can be found for Dromana, Flinders, Mornington and Tyabb Cemeteries at the URL below for the Mornington Peninsula Cemeteries Project.
