Address: Off Bruce Highway, Hampden 4741 QLD
Hampden Cemetery was in use for a relatively short period and contains inscriptions dating from 1912 to 1949. Information displayed at the cemetery lists all known burials and provides a brief history of the site since it was gazetted in 1910.
"Originally the cemetery was in the care of trustees of local residents but passed to the control of the Pioneer Shire Council in the early 1930s. Following the amalgamation of local Councils in 1994, the Hampden Cemetery became the responsibilty of the Mackay City Council. Over the years, about twenty burials took place, the last being in 1949. Since then, there has been one deposition of ashes following a cremation.
"The cemetery gradually became neglected until a party of nearby Hampden State School students began uncovering the tombstones in 2002. Since then, widespread community participation and Mackay City Council involvment has resulted in the restoration of the cemetery establishing it as a place of local historical importance."
Peter and Karen Patterson-Kane visited Hampden Cemetery in August 2010 and made a digital image of every visible inscription. Peter said that its grounds were very neat and tidy and well maintained by Council.
