Kerry Catholic Cemetery
Address: Kerry Road, Kerry 4285 QLD
Kerry Cemetery is on a hill at the rear of St John's Catholic Church in Kerry Road. Peter Arthur, who visited the cemetery in May 2010, describes it as a quiet and peaceful setting. The grounds were in excellent condition and the monuments generally upright and the inscriptions legible.
Although there are three earlier inscriptions, the cemetery appears to have come into general use about 1899. The inscriptions reflect the large numbers of Irish immigrants who settled in this area in the 19th century. A large shelter was erected on the site in 1997 to the memory of James Michael Deerain who died the previous year and is buried in this cemetery. Tank water is available at the shelter and toilets at the rear of the church.
Peter Arthur has contributed his digital images of the cemetery and every visible inscription he made on the occasion of his visit. He also compiled the list of inscriptions for this cemetery with reference to the Queensland indices of births, deaths and marriages and to the Australian War Memorial online military rolls for additional information.
