Merriwa General Cemetery

Address: Flags Road, Merriwa 2329 NSW

The general cemetery was established c.1900 to replace the earlier Anglican and Catholic cemeteries in the township. The monumental section comprises two denominational portions only - Anglican and Catholic. The portions are clearly indicated but there are no row markers. An adjoining lawn cemetery has been recently established and contains markers dating from 1996. The whole site is well fenced, with reticulated water and has been well maintained by the former Merriwa Shire Council. The only problem we encountered was a considerable quantity of glass fragments from broken flower containers that represents a hazard to visitors.

Jean and I visited the cemetery on two occasions in July 2004 and made digital images and notes of every visible inscription. In compiling this list, we also referred to the NSW indexes of births, deaths and marriages to determine some difficult to read names and dates and for further information. Images of the inscriptions may be viewed and downloaded from the list of all inscriptions for this cemetery.
